This month’s section meeting will be a presentation by Angela Hintz, P.E., as she will present an overview on The Price of Development on Water Supplies in Paraguay and Argentina. Nick Montaldi will provide an update on the UB ASCE Student Chapter activities. Student Resume Booklets will be available for you and we will recognize David Duchscherer, P.E., F.ASCE, for his attainment of Life Member status with ASCE.

Presentation Details:

As residents of the United States, we trust that our appliances will operate off a steady stream of electrical power or natural gas supply, water will come out of a turned-on faucet, and that our waste does not merely disappear down the drain, but will be treated and re-released into local water supplies.

In South America, the citizens of Paraguay and Argentina have the same water needs. Angela Hintz spent a month in the countries of Paraguay and Argentina in the spring of 2009 as a member of a Rotary International Group, Study Exchange Program, experiencing the local culture, but also examining the local water issues. Through this presentation, you will learn:

• How water plays an important role in the economies of both Paraguay and Argentina.

• The availability of fresh potable water to residents within these countries.

• The reliability of waste treatment within the area.

• Challenges faced by South American water utilities as they strive to improve public health through water treatment.

• The importance of hydroelectric power generation

• The environmental and economic impacts realized with the expansion of the hydroelectric power systems.

About Angela Hintz:

Ms. Hintz has focused her work on planning evaluations for numerous facilities in NYS, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, and Ontario, Canada, including treatment process troubleshooting, evaluation of alternatives, and design and construction services. About the UB ASCE Student Chapter:

The University at Buffalo ASCE Student Chapter has been striving to achieve exceptional standards and instill pride in its membership. Over the course of the last 3 years they have received outstanding marks at Regional design competitions for Steel Bridge, Concrete Canoe, and Seismic design teams. With this success the design teams have represented the University and community very well at the respective National Design Competitions. They played host for the Upstate New York Regional Conference in 2009 and as a result of their outstanding organization and fluidity of the conference were recommended to host the National Concrete Canoe Conference in coming years. The organization also began hosting the Annual ASCE Golf Tournament and Wine Tour as a method to raise funds and promote interaction between the Student Chapter and the Buffalo Section members. With proceeds from this tournament and other funding sources UB ASCE recently purchased a 25’ enclosed trailer as a means of safe transport for all of their design team projects. They have also implemented with great success a resume review and shadowing program.
